May 15, 2018

Attendees

Co-leads: Jeff Vukovich (USEPA), Doug Boyer (TCEQ) Brian Sullins (Alabama DEM),Miranda Kosty (TCEQ), Stephen Coe (Montana), Susanne Cotty (PA Region), Jiang Majong (CARB), Josh Pope (PA Region) Guests: Alex Guenther, Tejas Shah, Greg Yarwood

Agenda

Minutes/Notes

  • MEGAN3 user guide, global input variables, emission factor processor (MEGAN-EFP), and model updates from the following weblink.
  • How is the landuse, ecotype, growth form, and individual tree species data used in MEGAN3 (not the preprocessor)? For example, can we calculate the gridded amount of Post Oak in Texas (or a specific county) in MEGAN3? If a specific state or local group wanted to update the landuse (or part of it) in MEGAN3, how would they go about doing that?
    • See Tree cover area description (dated May 15, 2018)
    • The referenced files are in comma-delimited (CSV) format and can be obtained from the MEGAN-EFP package.
    • Discussion occurred about MEGAN updating the landuse with help from Chris Geron (USEPA)
    • Suggestion made for Pima Co AZ group to interpolate their landuse to the 12km domain and MEGAN has capability to use new landuse pretty quickly
      • Must figure out which emission factor to use for new landuse types
  • Why are some emission rates zero in the MEGAN3 output (e.g., ALDX, TOL, XYL)?
    • MEGAN developers updated the species mapping for CB05 & CB6 such that no emitted VOCs are mapped to ALDX, TOL, XYL. They could delete output of these CB species to make the output files more compact.
  • MEGAN3 seems to have a broader diurnal profile of isoprene emission rates than BEIS (starts producing isoprene earlier and ends later; see slides 5 and 6 of https://drive.google.com/file/d/1LXEQNHBoFtB17x90TDMQel3cy3SOwykX/view?usp=sharing ). This was seen with MEGAN2.10 as well. Is this a function of how MEGAN interprets solar radiation?
    • MEGAN developers acknowledged a different canopy model setup could be the source of the differences
  • When using isoprene flux measurements be sure to bin the measurements based on wind direction
  • MEGAN has a soil moisture adjustment for isoprene emissions
    • If dry, isoprene emissions will be lower
    • Same approach for all veg types for this ISOP adjustment
  • GAEPD maps shown; suggest flip the percent difference plots so no yellow or less yellow
  • Isoprene flux measurements discussed
    • July 2016 data but need wind data in moles/s/cm2
  • May 2016 BEIS3 data on Colorado State ftp site may be corrupt
    • Need to check this soon
