Monitoring

Most of the air quality monitoring data used in analysis and tracking for regional haze planning in the WRAP region is collected by the Interagency Monitoring of Protected Visual Environments (IMPROVE) monitoring program. The IMPROVE network provides data results, associated reports, and the methods used to collect and analyze the samples collected by that program. In addition to the complete IMPROVE dataset, the VIEWS website provides enhanced analysis and display tools as well as access, display, and analysis capabilities for several related additional air quality monitoring dataset in and around the WRAP region.

Monitoring Data Analysis Tools

Time Series Tool

Time Series Tool

The Time Series Tool provides access to the IMPROVE data set. From this tool monitoring data can be reviewed based on visibility parameters, year selections, averaging periods, and aggregation methods can be selected and reviewed. Navigation Note: 1) Click the link above, 2) Select a site(s), 3) Click the "Monitoring" button below the map, and 4) Select one of the "Time Series" links.
Glide Slope Tool

Glide Slope Tool

The Glide Slope Tool provides data and displays to meet the requirements of the Regional Haze Rule glide slope demonstration, including baseline average visibility data, estimated natural conditions, and an idealized uniform rate of progress toward natural conditions. Navigation Note: 1) Click the link above, 2) Select a site(s), 3) Click the "Monitoring" button below the map, and 4) Select one of the "Glide Slope" links.
Data Query Wizard

Data Query Wizard

The Query Wizard allows you to retrieve raw data from the integrated database in a variety of output formats by selecting Sites, Parameters, and Date Ranges, and other attributes.
Analysis Results

Analysis Results

This page provides access to a wide selection of key regional summaries of visibility monitoring and modeling data across the WRAP region. Note: These results were generated in 2005 and 2006 and, while qualitatively accurate, are not based on the latest data sets.

Monitoring Methods

IMPROVE Particulate Monitoring:This document summarizes the IMPROVE network purpose, protocols, and associated WRAP-relevant issues.
WRAP Data Substitution Methods:This document describes the data substitution methods used at nine WRAP-region IMPROVE sites to achieve RHR data completeness or to fully populate the WRAP modeling year, 2002.
Natural Conditions Estimates for the Revised IMPROVE Algorithm:This document describes the development of natural visibility conditions estimates for the revised IMPROVE algorithm, performed by the Natural Haze Levels II Committee of the RPO Monitoring/Data Analysis Workgroup.
Key to Monitoring-Modeling-Emissions Mapping:This table summarizes the relationship among real-world visibility-related parameters and parameters defined by the IMPROVE program, the CMAQ and CAMx models, and WRAP emissions inventories. Specific topical designations and direct comparisons are presented. (HTML or Excel)

Monitoring Links and Projects

Visibility Information Exchange Web System (VIEWS)Offsite link...:VIEWS is an online exchange of air quality data, research, and ideas designed to support the Regional Haze Rule enacted by the U.S. EPA to reduce regional haze and improve visibility in national parks and wilderness areas.
Causes of Haze (COHA)Offsite link...:The Causes of Haze Assessment web is an online report that answers questions about the chemical components that cause regional haze, relationships of haze to meteorology, the emissions that cause haze, and the effects of previous and future emissions reductions on the poorest and best visibility levels.
