WAQS 2011b Platform Base Year Emissions

Introduction

The WSAQS used the Sparse Matrix Operator Kernel Emissions (SMOKE) processing system version 3.5.1 to prepare emissions inputs for photochemical grid models (PGMs). The WSAQS 2011 version B (WSAQS2011b) emissions modeling platform consists of data and software to estimate air emissions fluxes that best represent the conditions in the western U.S. during 2011. The base 2011 modeling period is annual, and included a model spin-up period from December 16 to December 31, 2011. The modeling domain includes a 36 km continental US (CONUS) domain with a 12 km nest over the western U.S. and a 4-km nest the covers the states of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming.

2011b Emissions Sector Definitions

The following sectors were used to represent air pollutant emissions for the WAQS.

WAQS SectorData SourceDescription
Aircraft/locomotive/marine (alm)EPA NEI 2011v2 sector C2C2RAILCounty-level inventory taken directly from the NEI 2011v2 platform.
Off-road mobile (nonroad)EPA NEI 2011v2 sector NONROADNMIM county-level inventories taken directly from the NEI for recreational vehicles, logging equipment, agricultural equipment, construction equipment, industrial equipment, lawn and garden equipment, leaf and snow blowers, and recreational marine. The CA and TX NONROAD estimates were normalized to emissions values provided by these states.
On-road mobile (onroad)EPA NEI 2011v2 sector ONROADEPA ran MOVES2014 for 2011 in emissions factor mode. The MOVES lookup tables include on-network (RPD), on-network refueling (RPD_RFL), on-network for CA (RPD_CA), off-network starts/stops (RPV), off-network starts/stops refueling (RPV_RFL), off-network starts/stops for CA (RPV_CA), off-network vapor venting (RPP) off-network vapor venting sources for CA (RPP_CA), and extended idling (RPH). These data include the reference county and reference fuel month assignments that EPA used for the MOVES simulation. The CA MOVES estimates were normalized to emissions values provided by CARB.
Refueling (rfl)EPA NEI 2011v2 sector NONPTCounty-level inventory taken directly from the NEI for onroad mobile refueling.
Non-point/Area (nonpt)EPA NEI 2011v2 sector NONPTCounty-level inventory taken directly from the NEI.
Fugitive Dust (fdust)EPA NEI 2011v2 sectors afdust and othafdustCounty-level inventory taken directly from the NEI. Applied post-hoc adjustments to the dust emissions to account for vegetative scavenging of the dust emissions.

2011 Phase II Oil and Gas Emission Inventories

The WAQS 2011 Phase II Oil and Gas wiki documents the oil and gas inventory and emissions data used for the WAQS 2011b modeling. This page includes summary spreadsheets and links to the SMOKE-ready data files (inventories, spatial surrogates, speciation profile, and temporal profiles) used in simulation 2011b.

2011b Emissions Summaries

Stacked bar charts for each of the WRAP states showing the contribution of each emissions sector to the over annual emissions in each state.

A full archive of emissions plots (2-d tileplots and annual timeseries) are available through the IWDW Image browser (under 2011 Base11b -> EMIS) and via ftp.
